Summer Camp 2009 - June
Country - City: Homestead - Florida - USA
To see in language:  English ,  (Español) Spanish

What follows are the happenings here at our Center for the month of June.......

Tutoring: summer camp is from 7:30am to 5 pm  monday-friday...Our younger group has 21 students and our older group has 28, total 49 studentes. The students are practicing math and language skills, as well as, recreational activities. Using small group instruction, we can focus on individual learning styles. Every Friday  the students enjoy their weekly movie.  Daily we pray before breakfast and lunch. Then the students participate in cleanup after lunch..........

Photo Class... how fortunate are the older students who work with Kevin Castro and Vannesa Miranda!!! Using our Photoshop, the students have designed our logo on the tee-shirts that were sent to Mrs. Aixa Barzaga from the Executive Uniforms Fashion Inc. in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mrs. Barzaga is manufacturing them as well as donating these tee-shirts to others, in order, to advertise our program.

Carpentry Classes... During our summer program, we are learning how to use many carpentry and automobile tools. This has been extremely helpful in putting together some new bicycles.

Sports: Football practice is available for students of all ages.  As a result, many young children are attracted..Using our RCMA football program, our younger students are competing with RCMA group.  Our proud parents continue to provide snacks, breakfast and lunch.  A generous family has donated the juice.

Bicycling... On June 25th, our students learned how to repair bicycles with incorporating safety skills.  The next day, Javier took 15 students to Homestead Bayfront Park where they thoroughly enjoyed the glorious day!!!!

Sewing (Roche Method)... how enjoyable it is to  see our advanced group of students create great bags and female clothing!!!  The participants attend instruction between 2-5 pm. Hopefully in the fall, these same students will enroll in our Saturday classes.

Library.... Here the older children are instructed in Photoshop...Also, our community is welcomed with assistance in filling different government documents.  Several people use the internet as well,k sharing the facility with the summer camp program....

Video Conference Classes: Thanks to the University of  ULSA Pachuca and Mr. Milton Zamora, educational classes are presented to teachers to improve their teaching skills.. On July 6th Dr Jorge Pina will direct this conference. Several teachers in the are have requested to participate as well... With the wonderful help of Maria Elena Escalera and Francisco (Paquito), great teaching materials are used bye the classes on Wednesday from 6 to 7 pm.

Summer Program Food: we are very fortunate to have received generous donations from many parents. Mr. Carlos Ortiz from Shape Lover's has given us frozen food.  Also, Mr Jorge Herboso  from the Emaus Brothers has donated a refrigerator to us.

We are happy to report the good news that we have received the commitment of 50 daily lunches and snacks for our summer camp program from "Community Action". This great donation will help us and our children's parents. One family has also donated all the ingredients and condiments and in so helping  those parents who were unable otherwise to prepare their share of lunches, do so now. We could see God's hands working when we receive so much help, talent, time and donations from so many of our brothers and sisters.

Exciting Anecdotes: It's alarming and depressing to know that some parents have not shown enough interest in their children's education. Such students earn money for their food by mowing lawns in the community. They have mentioned to us how they feel a genuine love here at the center and feel that they belong to a caring family!!!! This type of  testimony makes our mission here so worthwhile!!

Educators: We need to highlight the great effort our teachers have made while teaching extra hours. Truly, their busy schedule has enabled our students to receive the education and love they truly deserve. We have a great team!!!

Volunteers: Our amazind Ricardo Carrillo along with Juan and Kevin Castro, assist us with the library program, etc. Many thanks to these mentioned individuals, as well as our recent great volunteers.

Parents: Many parents came to our meeting on June 26 for information on the summer program. We also planned our fund-raising event to celebrate our 18th anniversary.  This will take place on July 20. We discussed the possibility of qualifying for a new food program and the increasing need of  help with this project. We are in the early stages of  planning for a football game between students and parents..

Thank you God. How  very blessed we are to have all of you in our midst. In so many ways, you use your talents and donate time as well as monetary giftsi to help us.  We are forever grateful!!  and  as we always have ended our prior reports by saying .."they are the true heroes of this humanitarian task.
